A skull, a cross and a butterfly are the three charms on this solid silver, 20 inch chain.
The skull is a very traditional Catholic symbol commonly used in vestments and Catholic art right up until the second Vatican Council. We can often see the great saints such as St. Teresa of Avila pictured with a skull on her writing desk, giving her a healthy reminder of her mortality.
The butterfly was a common symbol used to depict our own resurrection from the tomb of the chrysalis. And of course you cannot get to that place of resurrection without the salvation obtained for us by Jesus on the cross. So all 3 charms on this piece signify our mortality, our dependency on Christ, and the eternal life to come.
The small purple beads are amethysts. Purple is the colour of Lent, of penance, but also of Royalty. It helps to remind us that our King made the ultimate sacrifice for us, and all our little lenten sacrifices are in response to His great love for us.
