"St. Melangell and the Hare"
The story of St. Melangell is a cherished Welsh legend rooted in the 7th century. According to tradition, Melangell was an Irish princess who fled to Wales to escape an unwanted marriage. She sought a life of solitude and became a hermit in the remote Pennant Valley in Powys.
One day, Brochwel, the local prince, was hunting hares in the valley when one of the hares took refuge under Melangell's robe. Miraculously, the hounds refused to approach, and Brochwel was struck by her holiness. He granted her the valley as a sanctuary for prayer and protection of wildlife.
Melangell lived there as an abbess, leading a small religious community. She was venerated for her piety, and her sanctuary became a site of pilgrimage. St. Melangell is often associated with hares and is considered a protector of animals and the natural world.
Her shrine, at St. Melangell's Church in Pennant Melangell, still exists and attracts visitors seeking inspiration from her legacy.
